Gonarezhou in September
September is the hinge of the Gonarezhou year. The Trust's cool camping season hands over to the period it calls the best game viewing of the year, and for a few weeks you get both: serious concentrations at the water while the weather still behaves.
If you only want the answer
September is the last month you get peak-grade game viewing and a comfortable climate in the same trip. From here the sightings hold but the heat takes over.
The hinge month
The thirty-year averages show the turn clearly: 11 mm of rain over about 2 rain days, days jumping to 30.3°C after August's 27.1°C, nights easing to 17.3°C. Winter is over, and the long dry has had five months to do its work. What water remains is the park's entire circulatory system, and the game viewing along the Runde and Mwenezi pools moves from very good to the best the year offers.
This is also when the Chilojo Cliffs earn their photographs. Late-afternoon light on 180 metres of bare sandstone, with elephant crossing the white sand of the Runde below, is the image the park is known by, and September serves it almost daily.
The best starbed month of the year
Here is the September-specific play: the starbed platforms at Bhenji Weir, Malugwe and Gorwe are open-air decks above water points, and this month hits their exact sweet spot. The pans below are at their busiest of the year because everything else has dried, while nights at 17.3°C are still comfortable in the open, which they were not in July and will not be once October's heat arrives. If one night of your trip goes to a platform, make it a September night.

The small print
Heat management starts now rather than in October: build your days around early and late drives and accept the midday lull, because the animals already do. Carry more water than August habits suggest. And if your dates slip toward month-end, pack for real warmth; the slide toward the hottest weeks of the year is already under way.
