Month by month
Gonarezhou in March
The gates unlock on 1 March after the annual closure, but a reopened park and a ready park are different things. March gives you Gonarezhou half awake: green, empty and gorgeous, with the practical machinery still coming back online.
If you only want the answer
March is for birders, botanists and people who value an empty park over sightings. The gates open on the 1st, but the deep park often is not ready for you yet.
What 1 March actually opens
The park, yes. Everything in it, no. The remote and bush camps close from late November until March or April on dates the Trust does not publish in advance, and some internal roads stay shut after the rains even once the park itself is open. The honest sequence for a March trip is: pick your dates, then email reservations@gonarezhou.org and ask which camps and which routes will be open, and only then commit.
The Save River sand crossing deserves its own warning this early in the year. It demands a true 4x4 at the best of times, and after two months of rain it can be the single decision that makes or breaks your route.
The weather is already turning
The thirty-year average gives March 46 mm of rain over about 7 rain days, less than half of January's soaking, with days at 30.6°C and nights at 21.0°C. Storms still come, but they pass, and between them the light over the wet mopane is the kind photographers cross continents for.
Who should genuinely come
Come in March if birds are the point, if you want the park essentially to yourself, or if a green, dramatic, difficult Gonarezhou appeals more than a productive one. Grass stands high, the game is scattered across full waterholes everywhere, and visibility is the worst it will be all season. Insect activity, tsetse included in parts of the lowveld, is at its most enthusiastic in these warm wet weeks, so pack repellent and skip the dark clothing.
The practical play is to base yourself at Chipinda Pools Tented Camp, ten minutes inside the northern gate, rather than gambling on deep-park camps that may not be taking guests. No booking pressure exists in March; you can decide late and still get what you want.
