Month by month

Gonarezhou in October

October offers the plainest deal on the Gonarezhou calendar: the most concentrated game of the year in exchange for the hardest weather of the year. Nobody should book it without understanding both halves of that sentence.

If you only want the answer

Come in October for sightings and endure the heat, or skip it for comfort and accept second-best viewing. There is no version of October that gives you both.

How hot is October, really

The thirty-year average says days of 32.5°C, the highest of any month, with nights at 19.5°C and 26 mm of rain as the first storms begin to probe. Two honest caveats on that figure. First, an average maximum of 32.5°C contains plenty of days well above it. Second, you will read claims of 42 to 45°C October heat on other websites, and we could not verify those numbers against any source we trust, so we will not repeat them as fact.

What the record does support is this: October is hot, dusty and glaring, and it stays warm after dark in a way the winter months never did.

Why people book it anyway

Because the viewing formula reaches its maximum. After six rainless months, every pool on the Runde and Mwenezi is a crowded stage from first light, the bush hides nothing, and the Trust's own guidance names this stretch the best game viewing of the year. Photographers get bone-dry air, desperate congregations and that sandstone light on the cliffs.

The consolation prize of the heat is logistical: October books more easily than July through September. The mid-year scramble is over, and shorter lead times can still land the good camps.

Building a day that survives it

Drive at dawn, be stationary in shade by late morning, drive again from mid-afternoon. Choose camp accordingly: river-frontage shade at the developed campsites matters more now than any other month, and in the quiet south, Swimuwini's solid-roofed lodges with standing fans and 265-litre fridges are the most heat-proof budget beds in the park. Freeze water before you enter, and treat the first storms as theatre rather than relief, because 26 mm does not fix anything.

If mobility or heat tolerance is a genuine concern for anyone in your party, this is the month to move your dates rather than manage around it.
