Gonarezhou is fundamentally a camping park, built around wild sites, starbeds and self-drivers, and May is the month the climate finally agrees with that design. Comfort peaks now; the spectacular sightings peak later.

May is the camper's month: dry, mild days and cooling nights, with the park emptying of surface water week by week. Choose it for comfort, not yet for peak game.
Why campers should circle this month
The thirty-year averages give May 13 mm of rain across roughly 2 rain days, with days at 26.9°C and nights at 16.2°C. That combination, dry but not cold, warm but not hot, is as kind as the lowveld ever gets to a person living out of a vehicle. Sitting around a firepit at a wilderness site in May shirt-sleeved, rather than shivering as you will in July, is the quiet luxury of the month.
It also happens to be when you get first pick. The eleven wilderness campsites and seven exclusive sites are allocated in discussion with the Trust when you book, and in May the mid-year competition for the riverside plums has not yet arrived.
The park, drying in real time
The grass is dropping and browning, visibility improves week by week, and the pans away from the rivers begin to fail. The Runde and Mwenezi still flow, but the long contraction toward permanent pools is under way, and with it the slow gathering of game along the river lines. A late-May drive along the Runde already hints at what August will deliver in full.
Every road and crossing that matters is normally in play by now, including the Save sand crossing for those heading to the remote north-east, though that one demands a true 4x4 in any month.
One warning and one deadline
The warning: winter is close. Lowveld nights can head toward 10°C from here, so the warm layer you pack for dawn drives is not optional, whatever the daytime numbers suggest.
The deadline: May bookings themselves are relaxed, but May is also your last comfortable window to secure June to September dates at the six-tent bush camps.
