Season by season
Gonarezhou has a hard calendar fact most parks do not: it closes completely to tourists from 10 January to 1 March every year. Around that, the rhythm is classic lowveld: a long, excellent dry season from April into November, peaking as the rivers shrink to pools.

June to September. August here is genuinely rainless, 3 mm on the thirty-year average, against 98 mm in January. Nothing concentrates animals like water that has stopped falling.

Gonarezhou sits in Zimbabwe's south-east lowveld, hot semi-arid country that is markedly drier than the north and east of the country, with around 645 mm of rain a year falling almost entirely in the summer months. As the dry season deepens, the Runde, Save and Mwenezi shrink toward permanent pools and the game concentrates along them, which is exactly when the park is at its best.
The annual temperature range runs roughly from 10°C on winter nights to around 32°C; you will read claims of 42 to 45°C October heat elsewhere, but no source we trust verifies them. October and November are certainly the hottest, dustiest stretch, and you should plan drives for early and late in the day.
