Chiredzi: the gateway town, and how to use it properly

What the town actually offers

Fuel first, because it is the item you cannot improvise. Chiredzi is the last reliable fuel before the park, roughly 50 km from the northern gate, with Triangle down the road as a fallback; a pump at Chikombedzi is sometimes mentioned for the south but is flagged as unreliable even by the source reporting it, all as recorded in our July 2026 route research. Fill the vehicle and every jerry can here, sized to your whole park circuit plus reserve, because there is no fuel inside Gonarezhou at all.

Banking has genuinely improved: Stanbic Bank officially opened a Chiredzi branch in September 2026 with a 24-hour ATM and cash deposit machine, and CBZ also lists an ATM site in town. What we could not verify is whether any Chiredzi ATM reliably dispenses US dollars to a foreign card, and in Zimbabwe you should not bet a trip on it. Arrive already holding the US dollar cash you need for gate fees and emergencies, in small denominations, because our July 2026 fees research found no published payment methods at the park gates and you should not count on card facilities there.

For shopping, Chiredzi has proper supermarkets. TM Pick n Pay on Marula Drive is the big modern one, with a bakery and butchery, and there is an OK Zimbabwe store as well, so you can provision a full camping trip in one stop. Mobile signal is the quiet deadline: Chiredzi is the last dependable coverage, the signal fades fast on the road south and is patchy to non-existent inside the park, so download offline maps, send your itinerary to someone, and make your last calls from town.

Where to sleep the night before

Chiredzi has a small but real set of beds, all confirmed as currently listed and taking bookings when we checked on 12 September 2026. None of them are safari lodges; they are clean, practical town hotels, which is all the night before the park needs to be.

The Nesbitt Arms, at 238 Marula Drive, is the town's polished option: a refurbished 29-room hotel with gardens, a pool, a bar and free parking, in the mid-range price class for Zimbabwe town hotels. Clevers Hotel Chiredzi is the local stalwart in the suburbs near the Hippo Valley golf club, also 29 en-suite rooms, with DSTV, WiFi and secure parking, in a similar mid-range class. Clevers Lakeview Resort, run by the same group, adds self-catering lodges alongside hotel rooms in garden grounds, useful if you want to test your camp kitchen setup a night early. If you would rather wake up at the park than in town, Chipinda Pools Tented Camp sits ten minutes inside the main gate with real beds and a kitchenette, from $130 per person on the Trust's rate card gathered July 2026, and the Chipinda Pools campsites are alongside. That trades Chiredzi's convenience for a head start on the park; just remember to arrive within gate hours.

Timing the morning: gate hours and the drive

The run from Chiredzi to the Chipinda Pools gate is about 55 km: 21 km of tar towards Mutare, then around 34 km of gravel from the signposted junction, taking 1 to 1.5 hours, per our July 2026 route research. The Trust's 2026 park map, the first official source we have found that prints hours, gives opening at 06:30 and closing at 17:30 from April to October, and 06:00 to 18:30 from November to March. Late arrivals need prior authorisation from reservations@gonarezhou.org and can be refused or redirected, so do not plan to squeak in at dusk.

The practical maths for the dry season: leave Chiredzi at 06:00, reach the gate near 07:00 shortly after it opens, complete entry paperwork and fees, and you are on the Runde with the whole day ahead, which matters because the park's internal roads are slow and the same map requires you to be in camp from 18:00 or 18:30 depending on season, with no night driving allowed. Camps are unfenced, so arriving with daylight to set up is not a nicety, it is the plan.

The provisioning list: what you cannot buy after Chiredzi

There are no shops, no food for sale and no fuel inside Gonarezhou, and a strict carry-in, carry-out policy applies. Two exceptions worth knowing from the Trust's 2026 park map: firewood can be bought at the entrance gates, so you need not haul it, and borehole water is available at Chipinda Pools with treated water at Mabalauta and Swimuwini, though the Trust still tells guests to bring their own drinking water. Everything else on this list is Chiredzi or nothing.

• All food for every day in the park, plus at least two spare days' food and water, which the Trust's own pre-departure checklist requires in case you get stranded
• Drinking water in bulk; camp supplies are untreated borehole or river water
• Fuel: full tanks plus jerry cans sized to your circuit and reserve
• US dollars in cash, small notes, for gate fees, firewood and emergencies
• Gas canisters or cooking fuel; only firewood is sold at the gates
• Rubbish bags for the carry-out policy
• Offline maps downloaded, plus a paper backup; GPS and a satellite communicator if you have them
• Recovery gear: traction boards, tow rope, compressor, spare tyres, checked before you leave town
• First-aid kit and any medication; the nearest pharmacy is behind you
• Fresh bread, meat and produce from TM Pick n Pay or OK on the final morning or the evening before
