Flying to Gonarezhou: what actually flies, and when it makes sense

Gonarezhou has a regional airport an hour from the main gate and three registered airstrips inside the park, yet almost everyone still arrives on four wheels. Here is the real state of scheduled and charter flying as of 12 September 2026, and an honest answer on whether you should fly at all.

If you only want the answer

If you are self-driving, keep driving: your vehicle is the safari here, and flying in leaves you without wheels in a park built around them. Flying makes sense in three cases: you are a Singita Pamushana guest on the Federal Air link from Johannesburg, you are booked into a catered camp with transfers arranged, or you are stitching Gonarezhou into a multi-park fly-in itinerary. Scheduled service to Buffalo Range is thin and in flux: as of 12 September 2026 we could not confirm any Fastjet flights, and Air Zimbabwe's brand-new Harare-Chiredzi service had only just launched with its permanence still undecided.

Buffalo Range (BFO): what we could and could not confirm

Buffalo Range Airport sits just outside Chiredzi, about an hour by road from the Chipinda Pools gate and up to three hours from the remoter southern sections. It handles scheduled and charter traffic and offers customs and immigration for international charters, which makes it the region's air gateway on paper. The scheduled picture, checked on 12 September 2026, is less tidy than most safari sites suggest.

Fastjet flew Harare to Buffalo Range in the past, and many guides still repeat that as current fact. We could not confirm it. Fastjet's published network on 12 September 2026 covers Harare, Bulawayo, Victoria Falls and Johannesburg, with no Buffalo Range service bookable, and November 2025 reporting listed Buffalo Range only as a planned future expansion. What did change this month: Air Zimbabwe launched direct Harare-Chiredzi flights in early September 2026, timed for the Sanganai tourism expo of 9 to 12 September 2026, at a published US$155 one way and US$279 return, a roughly 45-minute flight replacing about five hours on the road. As of 12 September 2026 the government was still assessing passenger numbers before committing to the route permanently, so treat it as promising but unproven until it appears as a bookable ongoing schedule.

The one genuinely established scheduled link is Federal Air from Johannesburg: a twice-weekly Pilatus PC-12 service to Buffalo Range, reported as Mondays and Thursdays in April 2024, operated primarily for Singita Pamushana guests and booked through the lodge, with full charters also possible. Confirm current days with Federal Air or Singita when you book.

The charter reality: airstrips and paperwork

Charters are how fly-in guests actually reach the park itself rather than the airport outside it. The Gonarezhou Conservation Trust's FAQ, checked 12 September 2026, says charters can access three registered airstrips inside the park with pre-authorisation, naming Chipinda Pools, Mabalauta and Malipati. The Trust's own 2026 park map prints coordinates for Chipinda Pools, Mabalauta and Mahenye instead, so one of those two lists is stale; confirm your intended strip with the Trust rather than assuming.

The paperwork is real: contact reservations@gonarezhou.org at least 7 days before arrival to arrange approval letters, and route international charter arrivals through Buffalo Range, where customs and immigration are available. The Trust's camps map onto the strips cleanly enough: the northern camps, from Chipinda Pools Tented Camp to the Chilojo and Mahove bush camps, all list Chipinda Pools as their airstrip, while the southern camps such as Swimuwini and Bosman's list Buffalo Range with a long road transfer.

Singita Pamushana is its own system: it stands in the private Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve next to the park, not inside it, and Singita arranges access via the Federal Air scheduled flight to Buffalo Range, about 45 minutes from the lodge, or by private charter, with April 2024 reporting naming the reserve's Lonestar airstrip about 12 minutes out.

On price, we will not print a number nobody publishes. No operator we could find publishes a rate for a Harare or Johannesburg charter into Gonarezhou; charters are quoted per aircraft, not per seat, priced on the whole return flight, and you pay for the plane whether it is full or not. Get quotes from a Zimbabwe charter operator such as Executive Air, or let your camp or agent arrange it, and expect the flight to rival the cost of several nights in a Trust bush camp.

The honest comparison: drive or fly?

For most visitors the drive wins, and not just on money. Gonarezhou is a self-drive park to its bones: the camps assume you arrive with your own 4x4, your own water, food and recovery gear, and there is no fleet of safari vehicles waiting at the airstrip. Fly in without pre-arranged transfers and game drives and you have landed in a wilderness with no way to move through it. SafariBookings, checked 12 September 2026, puts Chipinda Pools at about 500 km south of Harare; that is a long day, but your vehicle then earns its keep for the entire stay.

Flying earns its place in specific cases. If you are booked into Singita Pamushana, the Federal Air link from Johannesburg is the designed route and the lodge handles everything from the tarmac onwards. If you are staying at a catered camp such as Chilojo or Mahove Bush Camp and the Trust or your operator has confirmed the Chipinda Pools airstrip transfer, a charter converts two hard driving days into an afternoon. And if Gonarezhou is one stop on a wider fly-in circuit, through Buffalo Range you can connect onwards without ever touching the Masvingo road.

If your trip is short, be realistic about the arithmetic. Two days of driving out of a five-day trip is a poor trade, and that is the strongest genuine argument for flying; just remember that the new Air Zimbabwe schedule was days old when we checked on 12 September 2026, so have a road plan as a fallback if the flight is cancelled or the route is dropped.

  • Catered Trust bush camps with transfers confirmed: a charter to Chipinda Pools is defensible on short trips.
